Applying for citizenship

The right to citizenship in Ebenthal is regulated by the 2021 Nationality Act, based on Title II, Article 5 of the Constitution of the Kingdom. The Ebenthaler State recognizes jus soli, jus sanguini and naturalization as legitimate means of acquiring the status of citizen and subject. The State reserves for itself the right to decline applications for citizenship through naturalization, and provides in Title II, Article 6, of the Constitution, reasons and means by which a citizen may be stripped from his legal status.

According to the aforementioned Article 5 of the Constitution, the following are automatically citizens of Ebenthal:

   1. Those who may be born in Ebenthal.

   2. The children of an Ebenthaler parent who, born abroad, may come to reside in Ebenthal for a year.

Those who meet the following criteria when applying for citizenship become citizens by naturalization:

   1. Those who may be proficient in Portuguese and/or English.
   2. Those who may be free from past or present serious criminal convictions in any jurisdictions.

Upon having their citizenship applications granted, new citizens are permanently registered with the Ministry of the Interior's Registration Office and receive an online identity card. They immediately exercise all the rights and duties of an Ebenthaler citizen. Requests for withdrawal from citizenship must be sent through the Registration Office's official communication channel.
