Last Sunday, June 18th, the Konkrëse session had the largest quorum since the resignation of Prime Minister Baron of Sommerlath, with the participation of 9 of the 15 members of the House of Councillors. The low quorum surpassed, however, the smaller ones of the sessions of the 11th and 4th of June and of the 28th of May. External observers indicate that the low participation of parliamentarians in legislative activities is mainly due to the absence of a government project by the National Party, added to the tension built by the creation of the Nordic Party which, the Nationals accuse, threatens to divide the nation between Brazilians and foreigners, especially Swedes, who form the 4th largest nationality in Ebenthal.
In this last session, the opposition New Democrats presented a bill that aims to establish quotas for citizens of non-Brazilian origin in public administration. According to the Leader of the Opposition The Duke of Aureaburgh, the project's fundamental objective is to incorporate foreigners into an administrative structure alien to them, making the State reflect their multicultural population reality. Bernardo Barcelos, however, MP for Eichenham, does not deny that the intention of the project is effectively to fight the Nordics right at the beginning, "to cut the evil at the root", said the parliamentarian when questioned.
Faced with this political scenario, some wonder: where is the King? What is his position? Accustomed to the Monarch's interference in the country's political day-to-day, however, they will have to get used to a reality closer to parliamentary constitutionalism, in which the Sovereign is a figurehead, rather than the model of an executive monarchy. The Minister of the Interior complained that the King's abstention from current policy was certainly another factor in the low parliamentary turnout.
Returning to the heart of the matter, after months of tension, opposition and government, at least, seem to agree that despite the good political performance of former Prime Minister Sommerlath, his creation, the Nordic Party, threatens to destabilize the nation and has acted as a co- belligerents in a political battle against the Swedish-born politician who currently occupies a seat in the House of Aristocrats. The New Democrats' bill was endorsed by Republican Party Chairman Alessandro Rosas and appears to have divided government supporters. The government's official position, explained by the Prime Minister, is that his party will seriously consider the proposal of the New Democrats and hopes "to be able to work with all truly patriotic Ebenthali for the good of the country".
