After a dark period, Ebenthal flourishes again
The turn of the year from 2023 to 2024 was turbulent for Ebenthaler politics. With the Swedish Crisis resolved with the intervention of the Monarch, King Arthur II stepped away from the scene, leaving politics to be managed by the democratically elected representatives of the nation. However, several factors contributed to a rapid decline in national political activity. Seeking to revitalize the nation, on February 2, His Majesty The King presented to the Konkrëse a constitutional project that he had developed together with the Lord President of the House of Aristocrats. The project, which became known as the Constitution of the Two Kings, was quickly implemented by the Sovereign in a political coup, without a parliamentary vote or popular consultation; however, the move was popular and welcomed by the political class, coming into force on the 18th of the same month.
Once granted, it was only then that the new constitutional charter, the second in Ebenthal's history, came under political scrutiny, being amended on May 1. Inspired by the Brazilian constitution of 1824, the Austro-Hungarian constitution of 1867 and the Porto Claro constitution of 1996, the new Ebenthaler Constitution changed little of the national administrative structure. However, it formalized some practices that had already been implemented. The office of Prime Minister was abolished and replaced by the more powerful Archchancellor, to the detriment of the power of the Monarch, who nevertheless still retains substantial powers. Another major change was the establishment of a new capital, the municipality of Saxenfurt, from the merger of the former capital, the municipality of Brauncastel, with the neighboring municipality of Guterfolg. In addition, a new municipality, called Rotenberg, was created enclaved in the Brazilian town of Miguel Pereira.
The electoral system has also undergone changes, adopting the single non-transferable vote model—in which each voter selects a single candidate, resulting in multiple candidates being elected per district—replacing the first-past-the-post model—in which each voter selects a single candidate and only one is elected per district. Also in elections, the new constitution enshrines a special seat to represent the Swedish minority—just as other parliamentarians represent their municipalities—and provides the basis for expanding this system of parliamentary representation to other underrepresented minorities.
To cement this return, the governments of Ebenthal and Westarctica exchanged recognition, while the nations of the Pact of Cobalt, namely Karnia-Ruthenia, Quinta Velha and Ebenthal, formalized the Treaty of Sáenz Peña establishing the Condominium of Süden-Süden, an enclave within the cold Argentine town of Rawson, in the Patagonia region. With renewed activity, the Ebenthaler nation and people are heading towards their 4th general election, to be held on July 30. With this revival, may Ebenthal take even greater strides.
